Several smart doorbell makers are adding local storage options this quarter, letting owners save footage to a microSD card or home hub instead of paying a monthly cloud subscription. The shift follows growing frustration with recurring fees that can exceed the cost of the hardware within a year.

Local storage has two practical benefits: no ongoing bill, and footage that never leaves your home network, which some privacy-conscious buyers prefer. The trade-off is that you lose remote cloud backup if the device is stolen, so a hybrid approach — local as primary, a cheap cloud tier as backup — is often the sweet spot.
